Korean design begins with an understanding of Korean sentiments and history, and the architectural styles expressing traditional identity reflect the social ideology, cultural values and lifestyles whilst influencing directly on the formation of the consciousness and values of the users.
[Layer on Layer] is a shoe design project which reinterprets joinery techniques of the Korean traditional wooden architecture. Such joinery techniques include seven types of joint, called as ‘jja-im’, and five types of extension, called ‘ee-um’, and are developed in a simplified form according to the expression of tradition in contemporary Korean architectures.
This project is intended to interpret the Korean traditional design as a modern language by utilizing the shapes of joinery techniques of the Korean traditional wooden architecture, and thus to suggest the design elements of fashion products, which inhere the universal value.

한국적인 디자인은 한국의 정서와 역사에 대한 이해로부터 시작하며, 전통을 표현하는 양식 중 건축 양식은 지역의 사상, 문화 및 생활상을 대변함과 동시에 사용자의 의식과 가치관 형성에 직접적인 영향을 준다.
[Layer on Layer] 는 나무로 만든 부재 간 맞춤과 이음을 통하여 건축물을 완성하는 전통 건축 기법인 결구법의 기본을 이루는 일곱 가지 맞춤 기법과 다섯 가지 이음 기법을 차용하여 현대 건축물에서 찾아볼 수 있는 전통성 표현 방법에 따라 단순화된 형태로 재해석, 구두 디자인으로 표현하기 위한 작품이다.
본 작품은 한국 전통 디자인을 현대적 언어로 새롭게 해석하여 한국 전통 목조건축물의 특징적 디자인 중 하나인 결구체계가 가진 형태 요소를 보편적 가치를 가지는 패션 제품의 디자인 요소로 활용, 발전시키는 데에 그 의의를 둔다.
