A Study on the Upcycling Wall Design using Offcut Acrylics

As the world acknowledged the severity of the environmental problems, the upcycling got attention as one of the solutions. Based on Korean’s unique sign culture, this study is done on the upcycling wall design using offcut acrylics. Acrylic is mainly used in 3d sign boards. However, the negative space of alphabet and other offcuts from acrylic sheets become discarded and are downcycled. Acrylic, a non-toxic material, is suitable for applying to interior design and its various shapes, thicknesses, and colors are used in the wall design with composition technique. Therefore, this study introduces the upcycling wall design that is based on a culture, responsibility for the environment, and fun.
현대 사회가 환경 오염의 심각성을 인지함에 따라 이에 대한 해결 방법 중 하나로 리사이클링(재활용)을 넘어 업사이클링(새활용)이 주목받고 있다.
본 연구는 한국의 독특한 간판문화를 기반으로 업사이클링을 통한 벽면 디자인 작품연구를 진행하였다. 옥외광고물 등 관리법 제정 이후 간판에 입체 문자 사인 기법이 주로 사용되고 있으며 이와 더불어 LED조명에 탁월한 아크릴이 다량으로 사용되고 있다. 이 과정에서 자투리 아크릴로 생성되는 글자의 네거티브 면(여백)이 버려져 다운사이클링 되고 있다.
무독성인 아크릴은 인테리어 소재로 적합하며 자투리 아크릴의 다양한 형태, 두께, 색상을 디자인 요소로 활용, 평면 구성 기법으로 벽면 디자인에 적용하였다.
본 연구를 통해 지역의 특징을 살리고 환경에 대한 책임감과 재미를 더하는 업사이클링 벽면 디자인을 소개한다.
